The Shawnee Tribe on Thursday released a new seven-year plan to preserve the Shawnee Indian Mission and tell a more accurate history of the site.The plan's release comes as The Shawnee Tribe has faced increasing criticism from the Kaw Nation along with city and state leaders in the battle for control and ownership of the state and national historic landmark. The tribe, in its plan released Thursday morning, says it will commit at least $15 million to the site, 'contingent on the conveyance of the site back to the Tribe, who are committed to preserving and restoring this Shawnee Sacred Site to its period of significance as a federally mandated Indian Boarding School (1839-1862).
